Central nervous system (CNS)
symptoms are seen with acute radiation doses in excess of 1000 rads and are
probably due to diffuse microvascular leaks within the brain. Damage to these blood vessels results in
the loss of fluids and electrolytes, edema, increased intracranial pressure,
and death. This injury is
irreversible and the victim rarely lives long enough to suffer any
hematological or gastrointestinal symptoms.
Symptoms of shock and associated cardiovascular collapse may develop
quickly in these patients.
